Luncheon Program:
Bylaws Revision: Revamping the Judicial Endorsement Process
The Board of Directors approved proposed bylaw changes that will dramatically change the way the Association goes about endorsing candidates for judicial vacancies. The proposed bylaw changes are the result of a two-year study by the former Long Range Planning Committee, and the drafting efforts of the present Judicial Nominations Committee. The revamped process is intended to facilitate greater participation by both candidates and the membership by making it easier to participate.
Under the proposal, the Judicial Candidate Endorsement Committee - a new name to reflect a new role - can jointly interview candidates with other bar associations. The Judicial Candidate Endorsement Committee will not nominate a candidate or candidates for endorsement. Rather, the Committee will rank each
candidate it interviews as highly qualified, qualified or not qualified. The Committee's recommendations will be placed in a password protected location on the Association's web site, and also mailed or faxed to members who indicate in writing that they do not have Internet access. Members may submit letters of support for any candidate interviewed by the Committee, and these also will be posted on the web site, and mailed or faxed to those without Internet access. There will be no meeting of the Association to consider the candidates and vote on endorsement. Voting will be by mail, fax or email.
Copies of these, and other proposed revisions to the Association's bylaws will be mailed to the membership. The proposals will be explained, discussed and voted on at the Association's regular meeting on February 7. Please be there!
