Legislative Update!! The 2002 Virginia General Assembly commenced January 9, 2002...
So did the work of the MRWBA Legislative Committee.
As in years past, the Legislative Committee will be compiling periodic status reports on pending bills and resolutions thought to be of general interest to women attorneys practicing law in the Richmond metropolitan area.
Based on past member surveys, our bill tracking reports for this year will focus on legislation relating to Attorneys, Courts and Judges; Civil Remedies and Procedure; Reproductive Rights; Health and Insurance; Family Law and Domestic Relations; Children, Juveniles and Juvenile Justice; and Criminal Law and Procedure.
The Legislative Committee's Initial Report listing Bills introduced by the January 18, 2002 deadline will be emailed to members the week of January 21, 2002. Subsequent reports will be included in the next two monthly newsletters and will be distributed at luncheon meetings. If the MRWBA does not have your current e-mail address and you wish to receive updates by email or if you would prefer not to receive Legislative Updates by e-mail, please contact Ann-Neil Cosby at
ancosby@sandsanderson.com.
Members may request that the Legislative Committee include a particular bill in its reports by forwarding the Bill number to Ann Neil Cosby, at
ancosby@sandsanderson.com.

Are you interested in which candidates win judgeships this year?
The MRWBA Judicial Endorsement Committee has learned that the members of the General Assembly, while taking into consideration bar endorsements, also value hearing directly from their constituents about judgeships. There are numerous ways for MRWBA members to express their views to their legislators. You may, of course, contact your legislator in person. If you can achieve this, congratulations to you. Otherwise:
1. You may contact your legislator by phone by calling the
Constituent Viewpoint Hotline at 1-800-889-0229.
2. You may contact your legislator by email. To find out who your legislators are, and what their email addresses are, go to
http://legis.state.va.us.
Click on
Who's My Legislator. Type in your address, and your legislator's names and email addresses will pop up on the screen.
3. You may contact your legislator by mail. Follow the directions for #2 above. When you type in your address under
Who's My Legislator, the legislator's physical address will appear as well.
Should you choose to contact your legislator in writing, feel free to follow the sample letter shown below:
Dear Delegate/Senator __________:
As a constituent of yours, I am writing to encourage you to vote for _______ for the position of Judge of the ________________ Court.
I have known [and have practiced with] ____________ for __ years. He/she is exceptionally qualified for the position of ________ judge in that ____________. Acknowledging those attributes, the Metropolitan Richmond Women's Bar Association [as well as the ___ Bar Association] has/have endorsed ___ for the position. The citizens of _____would be well served if ____ were selected for this judgeship.
I thank you for your time and your consideration in this important matter.
