Legislative Update!! 2002 General Assembly Bill Tracking Cross-over, the day that each branch of the Virginia General Assembly must take action on pending legislation, occurred this year on February 12, 2002. Sine Die (the last day of the session) will be March 9, 2002. The MRWBA Legislative Committee has updated its original report to show those bills that survived Cross-over --and those that did not.
Again, while the Legislative Committee has prepared what it hopes is a comprehensive report alphabetically listed by subject, it is not possible to identify and monitor every important measure, and members are encouraged to follow the deliberation of the General Assembly as
carefully as their time and interests permit. Most importantly, members are encouraged to contact their senators and delegates to express their individual views on pending measures of personal and professional significance.
If you cannot take the time to visit your legislators, you can monitor the progress of legislation online at
http://legis.state.va.us. You can also contact your legislator by phone, fax or e-mail. Contact information is available on line at
http://legis.state.va.us or by calling Capitol Information at 698-7410 or General Assembly Building Information at 698-1470. Finally, you may call the Constituent Viewpoint operators toll-free at (800) 889-0229 or locally at 698-1990 to express your opinion on a legislative issue.
Our bill tracking reports generally focus on legislation relating to Attorneys, Courts and Judges; Civil Remedies and Procedure; Criminal Law and Procedure; Family Law and Domestic Relations; Health and Insurance; Juveniles and Juvenile Justice; and Reproductive Rights. This year, at the end of the Report, we have also included bills of potential interest to members related to Education. Subsequent reports will be emailed, included in monthly newsletters and distributed at luncheon meetings. If the MRWBA does not have your current e-mail address and you wish to receive updates by email or if you would prefer not to receive Legislative Updates by e-mail, please contact Ann-Neil Cosby at
ancosby@sandsanderson.com.
Our complete, most recent bill tracking report is available on the MRWBA's website
(www.mrwba.org) or if you don't have access to the web, please call Ann-Neil Cosby at 1-800-296-1636 and she'll be glad to get a copy to you.

MRWBA 2002-2003 Domestic Relations Rights Pamphlet For over ten years, the MRWBA has annually published a public information handbook entitled "Understanding Your Domestic Relations Rights in Virginia." This handbook educates the general public (particularly women) on legal topics such as divorce and annulment, spousal and child support, custody and visitation, adoption and family violence. The handbook is distributed free of charge to Virginia courts, pro bono project coordinators, legal aid offices, women's advocacy groups, community services boards, domestic violence agencies, and sexual assault crisis centers. Over 40,000 pamphlets are distributed annually across the Commonwealth.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Revisors- Members familiar with the 2002 legislative changes to domestic laws are encouraged to assist with updating the Domestic Rights Pamphlet. The time commitment is small and within a short time period. The reward is huge as your assistance directly benefits women and children across the Commonwealth. Contact Lori Rinaldi, 527-3445 or Lori_Rinaldi@Progressive.com
Fundraising - MRWBA Public Service is facing the challenge of raising $20,000 to fund the 2002-2003 Domestic Rights Pamphlet. If you know of any funding sources, would like to assist with the fundraising efforts or would like to make a personal donation, please contact Lori
Rinaldi, 527-3445 or Lori_Rinaldi@Progressive.com.
