March 2019

From the President

Mary Kidd, our administrator, has been working diligently the past few months to update our website. It’s been quite a task, and she’s done excellent work rolling out this system. If you haven’t been to in a while, go there now and take a look. We’ve kept many of the same features and pages but now you’ll also find a Professional Forum—a listserv of sorts—for members to use to discuss items of interest, request referrals, ask questions, etc. Click on Subscribe to Forum to receive email updates when others post items, or click on a particular topic to subscribe to that topic only. The Legal News page provides up-to-the-minute news from area law schools and legal sources. Potential clients who find you in our public-facing Lawyer Referral Directory now can contact you directly through the system without revealing your email address. Logging in and clicking on your name at the top of the Home page will allow you to update your contact information, your picture, and your client referral preferences without having to email Mary. (You also have to log in to register for events and lunches at the member rate.)

We hope this new website will increase the value of your membership, so please let us know if you have comments or things you’d like to see added or changed. And thank Mary for her hard work the next time you see her!

Joanna Suyes, Esq.,
2018-2019 MRWBA President

Board Nominations Sought

MRWBA is currently seeking members to serve on the 2019-2020 Board of Directors. A committee of Past Presidents nominates the Officers and Judicial Endorsement Committee members from the applications received. The membership votes on these nominations during the annual meeting in May. The President-Elect assigns Committee Chairs (note that Chairs & Co-Chairs serve on the MRWBA Board of Directors along with Officers).

Click here for Committee descriptions. Click here for more details and the application. Applications should be submitted by April 1st.

Spring Cleaning Time!

If your closets need a spring pick-me-up, and you also want to help out the community, you will have two ways to do so at the March luncheon!

The MRWBA will be collecting purses, accessories, and jewelry for Change the World RVA, an organization which helps homeless kids in Richmond area schools. Their big fundraiser, “Another Woman’s Treasure,” will be held April 12-13 at Bon Air United Methodist Church. Bring your purses, jewelry, scarves, and other accessories to be donated for the event (and, go load up on new accessories in April!)

Boots to Suits is an organization that outfits veterans with interview and work apparel. We will be collecting women’s suits, blouses, and interview-appropriate dresses/separates to donate. They must be dry cleaned, current, and in excellent condition.

Can’t make it to the March luncheon but have things to donate?

Valerie L’Herrou and Mollie Barton will be collecting items at their offices throughout the month of March. Downtown: Valerie L’Herrou, Virginia Poverty Law Center, 919 E Main Street (SunTrust center), Suite 610. West End: Mollie C. Barton, Stiles Ewing Powers PC, 3957 Westerre Parkway, Suite 400. For more information: valerie@vplc.orgor
