Domestic Relations Pamphlet

For over 20 years, the Metro Richmond Women’s Bar Association has published Understanding Your Domestic Relations Rights in Virginia, a guide to help the public understand the general legal circumstances that you may face in resolving domestic relations problems under Virginia law.

Help us sustain the Domestic Relations Pamphlet. Make a donation today! All donations should be made payable to the Metropolitan Richmond Women’s Bar Association.

The Top Ten Reasons to Help Make MRWBA's Domestic Relations Pamphlet ("the DRP") a success:

  1. The DRP provides an easy to understand, up-to-date and accurate overview of the domestic relations laws most applicable to our Virginia citizens.
  2. The DRP is a valuable resource for those who might not otherwise have access to legal services — whether due to lack of funds to pay for those services or lack of pro bono services available as a result of economic cut backs.
  3. The basic information provided in the DRP gives citizens the baseline knowledge they need to advocate on their own behalf (if necessary) in a legal process that may often be scary and foreign to them.
  4. The MRWBA has provided the DRP free of charge to Virginia non-profits, courthouses and domestic violence shelters for over 10 years.
  5. The DRP packages its information in a user-friendly booklet format that is readily accessible to those who do not have access to the internet or a printer.
  6. The DRP is also available online!
  7. The DRP is published in both English and Spanish.
  8. The DRP is seen as a critical resource by Commonwealth Judges and Clerks who provide it to citizens when asked legal questions to which they cannot respond due to their position.
  9. The DRP is a resource provided at domestic violence shelters to help victims of domestic abuse and others understand their basic domestic relations rights – this knowledge is power.
  10. The DRP is viewed as an invaluable resource by family law firms.

Each person faces unique circumstances which cannot be specifically addressed in a broad overview. This booklet is not intended to provide specific advice to you or to address your specific situation. You should use this document only as an introduction to understanding your legal rights.
