Legislative Breakfast Planned for April 26th

Make plans to join MRWBA, and emcee Juan Conde, for our Annual Legislative Update. The program this year will be offered over breakfast, and will be focused on questions and issues that are of importance to our members instead of each Legislator talking about what they thought was important during the General Assembly session.

_From the President

Dear Members, Colleagues, and Friends,

Here we are firmly in 2023, ideally having enjoyed some rest and reflection as we closed out 2022 and hopefully reentry to working during “normal times” (i.e. with no holidays on the horizon) has not been too painful. It is now February, and we are celebrating Black History Month.

In honor of Black History Month, our bar association in conjunction with the Hill-Tucker Bar Association, had the great honor of presenting an advance screening of the feature film Freedom's
Path
, a production of Soulidifly Productions. Soulidifly Productions is owned by Richmond’s own BK Fulton. The event came together rather suddenly, but was absolute kismet, allowing the MRWBA the opportunity for meaningful collaboration, to highlight an award-winning indie film and to raise in excess of $2000 for the Mid-Atlantic Black Law Students Association. If you were unable to join us for the screening, the film has now been released nationally and I would certainly encourage you to go see it.

We still have much on the horizon as we turn the corner on the bar year. Stay tuned for more information on our upcoming Mentorship Event in March, our Legislative Breakfast in April and our Business Meeting and Women of Achievement Award Ceremony in May.

Here are this month’s book and podcast recommendations:

Do You Know an Amazing Mentor? Submit Your Nomination for the Phoebe P. Hall Mentorship Award

The Phoebe P.  Hall Mentorship Award was established by the Metro Richmond Women’s Bar Association in 2019 in memory of founding member Phoebe P. Hall to honor outstanding mentors. Phoebe had a career as a distinguished Virginia attorney and Rector of Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a pioneer in Virginia law when she co-founded Hall & Hall, PLC in 1969 with her late husband, Franklin P. Hall, former leader of the Virginia General Assembly, and was the winner of MRWBA’s Women of Achievement Award in 2006. She was inducted into the inaugural class of the Virginia Lawyers Weekly Hall of Fame in 2018. Over the years she served as a mentor and friend to many young attorneys, and we are pleased to honor her legacy with this award.

While there is no official form to complete, nominations should be submitted in writing on or before April 7, 2023. Click here for criteria and complete details.
